A comprehensive introduction to Warsaw, combining its royal heritage and wartime history, in English
Discover the fascinating history of Warsaw on a guided free tour, taking in the city’s main sights. The tour begins at Sigismund’s Column on Castle Square, the symbolic heart of Warsaw and the traditional meeting place for both locals and tourists. From here, you’ll explore the grounds of the Royal Castle and learn more about Warsaw’s rise as the capital of Poland. You will then walk through the UNESCO-protected Old Town, where you’ll stroll through charming cobbled streets, admire colourful townhouses and visit the historic Market Square. Here, stories of merchants, kings and everyday life come to life, bringing the city’s past to life. Along the way, your guide will explain how Warsaw was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War and how the historic centre was painstakingly rebuilt after the war. The route also takes in the medieval city walls and the Barbican, which offer an insight into Warsaw’s defensive history. You’ll discover the legend of the Warsaw mermaid, hear stories about famous residents such as Marie Curie, and enjoy stunning views over the Vistula. The final part of the tour focuses on the dramatic events of the twentieth century. You’ll learn about the Nazi occupation, the Warsaw Ghetto and the heroic Warsaw Uprising of 1944, before arriving at the impressive Monument to the Warsaw Uprising. By the end of the walk, you’ll have gained a comprehensive introduction to the history, culture and identity of Warsaw, making it the perfect base from which to explore the Polish capital.
