About 1,700 years ago, the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to retire and build a massive palace on the Adriatic coast. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of Split. During our tour, you will explore the palace and its surroundings, see all the major landmarks, discover hidden gems known only to the locals, and hear stories from the past and present. The tour begins at the fountain in Josip Juraj Strossmayer Park, where you will be introduced to Croatia and Split. The monumental statue of Gregory of Nin tells the story of Croatia's turbulent history and the struggle for our own language and culture. Don't forget to touch his big toe! At the Golden Gate, you will learn more about Diocletian, a peasant boy who became emperor, and his life's project: the palace in Split. The palace, which served as both a military garrison and the emperor's residence, has been preserved in its original size.
